Fallbrook residents Howard and Gloria Walls Seelye celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 29, spending several days on “their second favorite island,” Catalina. The Seelyes, both native Californians, grew up in Whittier and met while attending Whittier College, in the office of the school newspaper. They have both had careers as newspaper reporters, editors and publishers, and later on the staffs of legislators, working on more than 35 political campaigns. Howard and Gloria moved to Fallbrook in 1985 from New...

FALLBROOK — The Fallbrook Encore Club hosted their annual Summer Party on June 22 at Sharkey’s Beach Officer’s Club at Camp Pendleton. The ’50s theme was a big hit with 118 attendees from both the Encore and Newcomers clubs joining in the fun. Poodle skirts, rolled-up jeans and bobby sox ruled the day and there were even a couple of “wigged out” hippies on hand. Photos from guests’ teenage years (including one mug shot) were on display, to the great delight of all present. Trying to match photos with their owners was a... Full story

As a chemical engineer I read extensively all sides of the Global Warming issue. I remain very skeptical that carbon dioxide is the primary cause and that humans either have caused it or can reverse it. According to the data, the temperature near the surface of the Earth has warmed less than one degree Celsius since 1880. That is not very much. Carbon dioxide is not a very potent greenhouse gas. Water vapor and atmospheric methane account for most of the greenhouse effect, about 95 percent. Humans account for less than... Full story
I would like to send out a big thank you and blessings to the kind gentleman who stopped on Highway 76 June 25. My daughter and I were on the way to a dance team bonfire in Oceanside when my car overheated and we had to pull over. I opened the hood and discovered the radiator cap was gone and so was all the fluid. Within a few minutes, a kind man stopped and offered to go and buy some water. He came back in about 10 minutes with two jugs of water. He filled the tank and stuffed a rag into the radiator. He refused any money...
Ms. Gerten has it right [“Our Second Amendment,” Village News, Opinion, 6/21/07]. Thus far in the US there have been approximately 22,000 infringements of the Second Amendment since 1934. None have ever been proven to have prevented a single crime, at least not in research by the American Academy of Science and the CDC. Still, the gun-grabbers and liberals of other persuasions are breathlessly attempting to pass more laws that do nothing to address the problems with guns: criminals. They just laugh at laws. That’s why they... Full story
Americans should be very disturbed about the federal government’s plans to have the United States join the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP) that will merge the US, Mexico and Canada into one nation with open borders by year 2010. The federal government also is quietly working to entangle us in a North American Union (NAU) similar to the European Union. In 1993, Congress entangled us in the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) that is now being used as the basis for the SPP and NAU. We must repeal NAFTA if w...
What is wrong with this picture? They are cutting back agriculture 30 percent and asking residents to use 20 gallons a day less water. Our water sources are stressed with the snow pack in the north 40 percent of normal, and the Colorado River is in its eighth year of drought. All indications are “Get used to it.” Yet growth marches on with our leaders debating whether a new development near I-15 and Highway 76 should be 1,200 or 800 homes (or something close to those figures). Future water plans are to accommodate 800... Full story
The truth is, when seconds count, the police are only minutes away after the phone call. No matter how diligent and motivated they are, police are virtually always in a reactive mode. It is not their fault. They have no legal obligation to protect an individual, and even if so, there will never be enough of them. The Second Amendment is not about guns, as the NRA claims. It is about the inalienable right of the individual to effective self-defense. This is why the DC handgun ban was overturned and why 80 percent of the...
As I read the media coverage and speak with people about fire protection in Fallbrook, Bonsall and Rainbow, it has become apparent to me that I need to clarify a widely held misconception in the community – we do NOT have a firefighting helicopter based in Fallbrook. Yes, we have an airport, with a helipad, with living quarters and office space for a helicopter crew, with a fuel truck for the helicopter, but the helicopter itself is not here. During the brief period of time that the city of San Diego operated the c... Full story
According to your beliefs, Mr. Monday, people’s opinions are being “formed by what news channel they watch or what political commentator they listen to.” And now after reading your letter [“Global climate change,” Village News, Opinion, 6/28/07], let’s add “what Hollywood movie they are watching.” You also stated that any argument to refute global warming is slated by the fact that most of them are “funded by corporations and lobbying groups with vested interests.” What about the others that are not slated? I think the...
Gary Pryor, director of the county’s Department of Planning and Land Use (DPLU), and Ivan Holler, who oversaw General Plan 2020 for Pryor, are both headed out the door. Holler earlier announced his departure. This week we learned that Pryor has already left. As I read about Pryor I unconsciously found myself humming that song from “The Wizard of Oz:” “Ding, dong, the witch is dead / Which old witch? / The wicked witch…” It is probably no coincidence that both are exiting now, in view of the fact that GP2020, which was o... I normally do not write letters of an alarmist nature, but a recent experience with a residential irrigation contractor in Fallbrook motivates me to write this. Having hired a locally advertised contractor on behalf of my mother, a 54-year resident of Fallbrook, we found out the hard way the shoddy and unprofessional work an unlicensed contractor provides. This creates the necessity of doing the legwork to check credentials. Had we taken the simple step of checking with the California Contractors Licensing State Board we...
“Any planned military surge must be accompanied by a surge for healthcare for veterans. We must be prepared to serve those who have served us – and we are not prepared at this time,” spoke Rep. Bob Filner of San Diego June 21 as he led a bitter fight against Republicans in the House. Filner, the liberal Democratic congressman from San Diego, is the bold champion for veterans and the new chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. Filner will conduct a community forum in Fallbrook on July 5 at the Democratic Club meeti...
